Here are a few quick sketches from my sketchbooks, all just a few centimetres in size and mostly done when the subjects were unaware that I was drawing them or were holding still for a spontaneous couple of minutes.

Practice

As you come to embrace the practice of sketching you may find it becomes quite addictive. There will not always be suitable people around for you to draw, but this need not deter you from exercising your sketching arm. Carved, sculpted and moulded depictions of faces can be found in all sorts of places, in a wild and wide range of styles. Here are a few sketches lifted from my sketchbooks, done in museums, churches and country houses. However wacky they may be, sketching sculptural heads from three-dimensional objects is always good practice that will ultimately feed back into your family portraits.
